Bhareeai hath pair tan dayh
Paanee dhotai utras khayh
Moot paleetee kapar ho-i
Day saaboon laee-ai oho dho-i
Bharee-ai mat paapaa kai sang
Oho dhopai naavai kai rang
Punee Paapee aakhan naa-eh
Kar kar karnaa likh lai jaaho
Aapay beej aapey hee khaaho
Naanak hukamee aavaho jaaho
When the hands and the feet and the body are dirty,
Water can wash away the dirt.
When the clothes are soiled, and stained by urine,
Soap can wash them clean.
But when the mind is stained by the residues of sin,
It can only be cleansed by the love of the Name.
Virtue and vice do not come by mere words -
Actions repeated again and again are angraved upon the soul.
What you plant is what you shall harvest.
O Nanak, by the Hukam of his command,
Mortals come and go in reincarnation.
When the monsters are nipping at your heels, the twentieth pauree wipes away all your sins. Translation and comments courtesy of: Psyche of the Soul, by Harbhajan Singh Khalsa Yogiji et al, Copyright 1993 Hand Made Books.
